Travel author and TV personality Rick Steves (Europe Thru the Back Door) spells his name with one "e" instead of two.
I decided to see if he was a descendant of Heinreich Stief.
He is not! Rick Steves was born and raised in Washington State. I tracked his ancestors back to western Canada, then to upper Maine, and then to New Brunswick. Although they lived in close proximity to the Steeves family, I can find no connection. I found another researcher more familiar with the Steves family, and he stated that he was impressed by the ability of the two families to never get the spellings confused. While the Steeves of New Brunswick are "Pennsylvania Dutch" - Germans via Philadelphia - the Steves are true Dutch, coming to New Brunswick via the Hudson River Valley of New York (New Amsterdam). While the Steeves names derives from Stief, the Steves name apparently derives from Stives or Stivers. |
