The Italian records are written on printed forms by the "sindaco" of the town (per the Napoleanic Code), and I have found that a combination of - the spelling of the recorder, the difficulty in distinguishing "e" from "i" and "a" from "o" (in script), and the choices of the indexer - has led to a lot of variation in the record indexes provided by FamilySearch.org.

I have also found that in the 1990 phone directory for Casalnuovo Monterotaro there remain 19 families (one of the largest groups) with the name "DeVita". AND, that there are 0 families with the surnames "DiVita", "DeVito", or "DiVito".

I have therefore elected to change all the relevant entries in my database to "DeVita".

I remain open to any substantial proof of alternate spellings.
