I have struggled for some time to explain the discovery of two marriages for this couple - the second coming 18 years later and after many children. Even though the first document is only the banns, the production of children in such a religous evnironment suggests to me that the first marriage occurred.

I recently had the opportunity to show these two documents to a researcher whom I frequently meet at the local Family History Center. He is hispanic and does deep research in Mexico. He noticed that the second marriage was signed by the couple, and suggested that this was evidence that they had been afforded an education. He also informed me that, in Mexico, the state does not recognize a church wedding as valid for conducting certain legal matters. He thought that this couple re-married in a civil ceremony to enable them to transfer property, or some such similar legal process.
