From their appearance together in the 1880 census to their burials in Graceland Cemetery,
I have unearthed little about these two brothers.
The 1930 census record for August and the 1940 census for William are just circumstantial guesses.
The WWI draft registration is clearly our August - and on it he is working as a sailor, which may explain
his scarcity in the census records.
The brothers are buried next to each other at Graceland, and I feel comfortable that it is them because the dates for August match and the alternative birth year for William could be explained as a confusion with his namesake older brother who died in infancy. Their obituaries also support this conclusion, as William has only August as surviving relative - which fits - and August has no surviving siblings. Also, the obits suggest that both men died batchelors (which also helps explain their scarcity in the census) and show both interred at Graceland. I am giving up on finding more about these two bachelors. I will be grateful to anyone who can add to their story. |
