Samuel Tipping and Phoebe Woodworth were both born in New Brunswick and
hence native citizens of Canada.
In his application for US citizenship in 1922, Samuel claimed to have immigrated
1900 MAY 16 - arriving via Canadian Pacific Railroad at the port of entry of
Vanceboro, Maine.
This is a typical route for immigration from New Brunswick.
I have found very few records of Vanceboro border crossings prior to 1906, so I assume that finding official documents supporting their immigration is not a worthy investment of resources. The 1900 census reports Samuel as immigrating in 1884, Phoebe in 1890, and each of their four surviving children as immigrating at age 2 years. This suggests that Phoebe was in the habit of returning to Canada to give birth and acquire Canadian citizenship for her children. In 1910 the couple was divorced and Phoebe claimed her four children were born in New York! In 1930, Phoebe claimed to have immigrated in 1888. From all this data, I surmise that the process of immigration evolved over time for this couple. Probably Samuel explored work opportunities in the USA prior to his marriage, and once married, began to take Phoebe with him until she became pregnant and returned to her family for the birth. By 1900 it seems the immigration was completed, and most subsequent data is for residence in the USA. |
