The window under the peak was our living room!
The building next door was once a Nehi Royal Crown cola plant. It is now a daycare facility. I remember that it was very noisy. As a child I spent my time outside on the sidewalk roller skating, and jumping rope, and playing hopscotch with my friends and my cousins Janet and Linda. My friend Louise lived just below us on the second floor (they had a porch). The landlady lived on the main floor and an old lady lived in the basement level. I played dolls and paper dolls and read books in the living room. (We called it the "front room")	Here you can see the other side of the Nehi building. In fact if you look closely you can see where it says Royal Crown Cola. My cousin Janet and her family lived a few doors up on the same street. My uncle Michael and his family lived a few blocks away and my best friend, Marilyn, lived around the corner. We went to Saint Raphael's Church just up the street. I walked to Webster elementary school nearby. Our neighborhood was very Italian. We had a lemon ice store nearby and a small Italian grocery nearby as well. Jerry's Pizza was a few blocks away. I used to go "down town" with my mother on the bus for any other shopping. She would buy me a hot dog or a strawberry ice cream soda if she had the money. I remember getting a new skirt and blouse and shoes once a year for school. I wore a lot of my cousin Gloria's hand-me-downs as well. My mother would buy my cloths big and hem them and then keep letting down the hem when I grew.
Looking up the street you can see a big red brick building. This was a sewing machine "sweat shop" that my mother worked in for a few years until she got a job at Remington Arms Factory doing piece work. My parents saved every penny that they could for a house of their own. I remember bubble banks full of change. It took 10 years of saving for the down payment. My father was a house painter until he got sick.
