Her complaint:
  • 2 NOV 1899 they married
  • at time of marriage they agreed that her son Lyman B (age 13) and his son (age 14) from his prior marriage be incorporated into family and supported by the husband
  • that she faithfully performed - including taking care of his son, who moved in with them in Berlin
  • cruel treatment, threats and abuse, foul temperament, etc.
  • 17 NOV: attempt to remove furnishings from house
  • 13 NOV: removed and hid some of her clothing
  • refused to support her
  • 13 NOV: drove her son from the house
  • she has no friends in Berlin, having come from Portage County
  • 18 NOV: he published a warning in Berlin Evening Journal: "will not be responsible for any debts contracted by my wife from this day forward . . ."
  • accused her of stealing his papers, when he had in fact deposited them with a friend for safe keeping
  • that he owned a farm in Waushara County worth $4000
  • that at the time of the wedding he transferred the property to his son - Herman Roberts
  • that this transfer was fraudulent and she should have been considered
  • that the deed just recorded - part of the plot to defraud
  • that he also owns farm equipment and notes of payment due amounting to $2000
  • that she has only a $50 team of horses and 40 acres of undeveloped land in Portage County worth $700 but encumbered by $600
  • that she has no means of support other than her labor and is burdened with support of her son
