GENEAL: The Leonhard Schmidtner family tree

The Family History of children of Leonhard Schmidtner of Milwaukee

Leonhard Schmidtner, also known as Baron von Kovalski, was a famous Milwaukee architect. Born in 1825 in Warsaw, Poland, son of Joseph Schmidtner, the most prominent architect in Poland at the time. He left Poland for Bavaria when he was 19, in order to escape military service. In Munich he worked with his uncle, Leonard Schmidtner, who was also an architect and public buildings inspector. At age 23, he emigrated to America, settling in Milwaukee. Among the many important buildings credited to his design or erected by Mr. Schmidtner in the state of Wisconsin may are St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, the State Prison, the House of Correction, the Madison School House, etc; but what crowns his name as an architect, is the County Court House in Milwaukee.
